What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese tradition that has been around for over 3000 years. It was brought to the U.S. in the early 1970’s.

The goal of acuuncture is to promote the flow of Qi- “chi’ energy- within the various meridiansby inserting the hair-thin acupuncture needles into certain points on the body.

When Qi is blocked in the meridians or in the channels, various symptoms appear. The acupuncturist will look at all of the symptoms in order to diagnose the patient using Chinese medical terms. In some cases, the western diagnosis can be helpful, but Chinese medicine looks at the entire body as a whole and targets the root of the problem.

Aside from improving energy flow, acupuncture also offers benefits in other aspects (i.e. spiritual, physical and emotional). Acupuncture stimulates the release of natural endorphins and  neurotransmitters, which are hormones responsible for a sense of well-being.

Your initial visit includes a comprehensive review of your medical history, a medical intake, a careful explanation of the procedure, and an acupuncture treatment.  The first treatment could last up to 90 minutes.

Return visit:

Return visits include an update on the progress, a reevaluation, a dietary recommendation, and an acupuncture treatment.  A return visit could last up to 60 minutes.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

Zento Massotherapy is focused on providing comfortable and effective acupuncture treatments.  Our aim is to make your acupuncture treatment as enjoyable as possible, while still achieving optimum results.  Many patients report a small tingling or heavy sensation at the location of the needle insertion.  This is traditioonally viewed as the activation of the acupuncture point, and it is the desired result of needling in order to obtain an effective treatment. Overall, a large majority of patients find acupuncture treatments to be quite comfortable and very relaxing. You will be taken step-by-step through the entire process.  Please remember that we are here to serve you and that you are ultimately the one in control.  If something is painful or makes you feel uneasy, please tell your acupuncturist.
